Nashville, TN (Feb 19, 2007) - Mind-blowing fun awaits young and old alike when they visit Adventure Science Center during the 10th annual Brain Blast on Saturday, March 3, a day devoted to understanding how the most complex organ in the body works.

Each year, Vanderbilt Brain Institute neuroscientists and students team with the Adventure Science Center for this special event to offer a wide variety of hands-on activities designed to let visitors experience and explore the body’s center of thought, imagination and movement.

“The brain is such a fascinating organ that captivates the interest of people of all ages,” said Christy Whitney, public events manager for Adventure Science Center. “Scientists are still uncovering the intricate dynamics that exist between the brain and the rest of the human body. Brain Blast is always a great day for young biologists to get a closer look at our bodies’ command center, and to take part in the exploration.”

Real human and sheep brains will be on display, and visitors may want disposable gloves to touch, and perhaps even hold an actual brain in their hands. The brains of numerous different creatures will be displayed in specimen jars so that visitors can compare the various sizes.

Brain Blast also will offer opportunities for visitors to build a model of a neuron using pipe cleaners and Styrofoam balls; to fool their brains through a series of optical illusions; and to experiment with stimulating different senses to see how the brain interprets information. Guests may even snack on tasty Jell-O brains.

Brain Blast activities will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and are included in the Center’s regular admission price.
