Nashville, TN - Sharing information about family safety is a top priority at the Adventure Science Center, which has invited a cast of safety-conscious characters that includes two crash test dummies, a couple of fire safety dogs and a talking and singing smoke detector to its Safety Fair on Sept. 24 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Families are invited to learn about everyday safety practices in the home, car and at play. Larry and Vince, the crash test dummies, will be demonstrating the proper way to wear a seatbelt. Also attending the Safety Fair, to be held at the Center, with be SherRUFF the Dog of the Metro Police Department; Sparky the Dog from the Murfreesboro Fire Department; and Smokey, a talking and singing smoke detector.

"We hope families with children of all ages will come to have a great time with their oversized friends, and learn ways to keep safe in the process," said Kelly Alsup, an educator at the Adventure Science Center who planned the event. ŇOur local police and fire departments are working closely with us to plan an exciting Fair so that children remember these tips when they go back to their homes and schools."

Safety Fair will feature the following activities:

  • The Metro Police Department will offer fingerprinting and information about how to create an at-home DNA sample kit for children.
  • Davidson County Extension will sponsor Germ City, an exhibit that lets kids explore ways to get rid of "cooties."
  • The Metro Fire Department will open its Safety Trailer, a hands-on modular home that demonstrates basic fire safety.
  • Buckle Up Bear, a character who promotes seatbelt safety, will be available for pictures from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • The Tennessee Health Department will offer demonstrations on helmet safety and information about preventing brain injury.
  • The Lawrenceburg Elks Lodge will sponsor a booth for teens and adults on bio-terrorism, disaster preparedness and the dangers of methamphetamines.

The Center will give away door prizes -- including a car seat, fire extinguisher, helmets, and first aid kit - throughout the day.

The Adventure Science Center is joining with the Children's Emergency Care Alliance to host the Safety Fair. Sponsors of the Fair include the Federal Emergency Management Agency, The Department of Homeland Security, Governors Highway Safety Organization and Allstate Insurance Company.
