Join us in a Celebration of National Children's Dental Health Month
“Give a Child a Smile Day
Saturday, Feb. 6
10 am to 1 pm
You may think you’re killing germs as you brush your teeth each morning, but the truth is you’re probably spreading them to anyone else using the same bathroom sink.
On Saturday, Feb. 6, Adventure Science Center and Delta Dental of Tennessee will celebrate Give a Child a Smile Day by looking at how germs spread and simple ways to protect one’s dental health through fun, hands-on activities and educator-led demonstrations.
Educators will offer live presentations using ultraviolet light to show how leaving one’s toothbrush in a holder next to other toothbrushes can allow germs to transfer between the brushes, as well as how the method of applying toothpaste to the brush can create cross-contamination between users.
“Most people have no idea that such simple, everyday actions can potentially cause them to share bacteria or viruses like H1N1 with other household members,” said Jenna Rice, Science Center educator. “Once you see it, however, it makes an impression and changes how you treat your toothbrush.”
Volunteers from Nashville Dental Alliance will lead other activities for the day, including making one’s own toothpaste, a live story reading and more. In addition, the first 200 children will receive free toothbrushes to take home.
“We’re excited to be a part of this day and to help in the oral health demonstrations at Adventure Science Center visitors,” says Phil Wenk, D.D.S., president and CEO of Delta Dental of Tennessee. “The different activities will help kids and parents have a new appreciation for their teeth and healthy respect for their toothbrush.”
