Discovery Labs

An ASC Educator brings all the equipment needed for these hands-on lab experiences. You choose one topic per date and provide the students, classroom and tables.

All labs are 45 minutes and for up to 30 students, except Fuel Up!, which has a maximum of 25 students.


BIO LABS
Students engage in inquiry and discovery experiences by using scientific tools to dissect real specimens and get the inside story on how a plant or animal lives and adapts to its environment!

OWL PELLET DISSECTION
Grades K-3
Discover evidence about the owl’s food chain and its food preferences.

SQUID DISSECTION
Grades 2-4
Learn about the adaptations, feeding habits, defense mechanisms and other features of squid.

SHEEP HEART DISSECTION
Grades 5-12
Explore how the chambers of a sheep’s heart work together to pump blood throughout the body.

BOTANY LAB
Grades 1-6
Learn about plant processes, dissect a flower and make a 3-D model of its main parts.

 

ENGINEER IT! LABS
Students use the engineering design process to plan solutions for problems, build and test models, analyze results, redesign and test improved solutions and plan plans for future revisions.

ENGINEERING FOR EARTHQUAKE SAFETY
Grades 4-9
Teams identify earth structures, investigate dynamics of plate tectonics, discover difficulties in predicting future earth shaking events, receive tips for staying safe during an earthquake and explore engineering techniques used to make buildings safer during an earthquake.

ROBOT CHALLENGE
Grades 2-6
Student robotic engineering teams use Robotix kits and the engineering design process to build and operate robots while solving challenges presented during this exciting activity.

TOWERS
Grades 1-6
Students design, build and test paper towers, determine how much weight they can support, collect, record and analyze data and revise their designs to improve the results.

ENGINEER IT: WIND TURBINES
Grades 4-9
Design, build, operate and test a wind turbine. Use scientific instruments, record how much power is being generated, evaluate your results, revise the design and use problem solving-skills to improve the turbine’s performance.

DIGITAL EXPLORATION LEARNING LAB
Grades 6-12
Students conduct simple experiments and use laptop computers, science probes, web cams and data logger software to record and analyze their results and improve the design of the experiment.

Program dates are subject to availability. Schools outside of Davidson County pay a mileage fee of 55 cents per mile. Traveling Laboratory fees have the material fees included.
